Overview

The New Zealand government will open applications for the Parent Boost Visitor Visa on September 29, 2025. This visa is designed for parents of New Zealand citizens and residents, granting them the ability to stay in the country for up to five years, with multiple entries permitted. Applicants may later apply for a second five-year visa, allowing a potential stay of up to 10 years.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Applicants must be outside New Zealand when applying and when the visa is granted.
  • Must meet health and character standards.
  • Must be sponsored by an adult child who is a New Zealand citizen or resident.
  • Must show financial capability to support their stay (or the sponsor must meet an income threshold).
  • Must be a genuine visitor with strong ties to their home country.
  • Parents with dependent children are not eligible.

Additional Conditions:

  • Applicants receive an approval in principle first, followed by proof of 12 months of insurance.
  • Once granted, the visa holder must enter New Zealand within six months.
  • The five-year stay begins from the first arrival date.
  • A compliance check occurs between the third and fourth year, requiring departure, a new medical certificate, and proof of continuous insurance coverage.

Pros

  • Family Reunification: Enables parents to spend long periods with children and grandchildren in New Zealand.
  • Flexibility: Multiple entries allowed during the visa period.
  • Structured Pathway: Clear process with approval in principle, insurance requirements, and compliance checks.

Cons

  • Exclusions: Parents with dependent children are ineligible.
  • Strict Conditions: Must leave New Zealand for compliance checks and reapply with updated medical/insurance proof.
  • Financial Burden: Requires proof of funds or sponsor income, plus mandatory insurance coverage.
  • Geographic Restriction: Applicants must apply from outside New Zealand.
