I think the dark side is how fake everything feels. Filters, staged lives, hidden sponsorships. It creates unrealistic expectations and a lot of insecurity, especially for younger people.

Do you think most influencers are aware of the harm, or is it just part of the system they’re stuck in? I genuinely can’t tell sometimes.

Influencer culture is fundamentally driven by attention economics. The system rewards engagement, not authenticity. Psychological research clearly links constant comparison to increased anxiety and reduced self-esteem, particularly among adolescents.

I might be off here, but I don’t think influencers are evil by default. Some start with good intentions, then money and pressure creep in. Still doesn’t excuse misleading people though.

PEOPlE forget its ALL ADS now. even sad STORYS r SPONSORED!! cant TRUST nothin online anymore smh

From experience, working with influencers on campaigns, burnout is real. Constant posting, staying relevant, pleasing algorithms. Behind the scenes, many are exhausted and anxious, even if their feed looks perfect.

Nothing like being told to “just be yourself” by someone who has a lighting setup worth more than my car and a sponsorship for bottled water.

I looked into this recently. Multiple studies show sponsored content disclosure is often ignored or misunderstood by viewers. Transparency rules exist, but enforcement is weak across most platforms.

It’s messy for sure!!! 😬 But I still think some creators use their platform for good causes and awareness 💖✨ We shouldn’t ignore the positives entirely!!!

Are we certain those “good causes” aren’t just branding exercises? I question the sincerity when activism conveniently aligns with monetization opportunities.

The real issue is structural. Influencer culture incentivizes performance over honesty. Until platforms reward transparency and accountability, the darker aspects will continue to outweigh individual good intentions.
